A new business development group is hoping to revive the shopping center and make the mall a place where the community comes together again.

Mall businesses recently formed the Shakopee Town Square Business Development Group, which is organizing a free moving showing of “The Polar Express” and other holiday activities Dec. 11.

The U.S. Census Bureau has selected Shakopee to be one of eight offices in the state charged with running the 2010 census.

Candidates are being interviewed right now to manage the site, which will officially open at Shakopee Town Square on Oct. 1, said Dennis Johnson, the Kansas City regional director for the U.S. Census Bureau. Staff hope to begin setting the office up in mid-August to early September.
